New Delhi:

A country’s economic prowess is automatically reflected in the field of ammunition and India must focus on boosting research and development as well as manufacturing capacity in this area, the defense minister said on Wednesday. Rajnath Singh.

“We have taken a step ahead of the days when a bomb’s size and explosive capacity were the only things that mattered. Now their intelligence is just as important,” Mr Singh said in his speech at the an event organized by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce. and industry (FICCI).

If advanced ammunition is the reality of new age warfare, then the country should focus attention on where it is today in terms of research and development, local capacity and manufacturing capability in this area, he said. .

“A country’s economic development and progress in science and technology are automatically reflected in its weapons and ammunition capability,” Singh noted.

He said the right lessons of history had to be learned to chart a new course for the future.

“History teaches us that whenever someone has been able to dominate the world, it is because he has done various experiments and research in the field of ammunition”, added the minister.

The employment of precision-guided munitions at Muntho Dhalo base played an important role during the Kargil war, he pointed out.

“As a result, we were able to achieve a very big victory in this war. And only yesterday (Tuesday) we celebrated the 23rd anniversary of the Kargil War,” Singh said.

After the Pulwama terrorist attack in 2019, India again saw the precision capability of such ammunition, which helped the armed forces achieve mission success, he said.

Mr Singh said it should be borne in mind that also in the future munitions – in accordance with their changing specialties – will continue to play a major role in wars.

On modern battlefields, ammunition presents itself in its new avatar, he said.

“They are able to take entries on their own, make course corrections and target a particular location at a specific time once they have been programmed to do so,” the minister noted.

“Like any capable hunter, these rounds are able to keep their sights on target for a very long time,” Singh said.
