President Moon Jae-in on Monday pledged efforts to enable a return to normal life, saying the tighter distancing rules would be short and strong.

In his opening remarks upon receiving the government’s economic policy briefing for next year, Moon said the political directions reflect a determination to overcome the crisis and achieve full normalization in 2022.

His remark suggests that the reinstated quarantine measures were inevitable due to the wave of the virus, but given the effects on the economy, they should end as quickly as possible to resume a gradual return to everyday life.

Moon said full economic normalcy can only be achieved under a stable quarantine situation and pledged to mobilize all available resources to expand support for small business owners affected by the tightened restrictions.

He also pledged efforts to alleviate social inequalities and polarization, stabilize house prices, increase housing supply and proactively respond to external risks that can threaten supply chains and inflation.

Moon said he had less than five months left in his tenure with many tasks still to be done and called for joint efforts to reach a successful conclusion.
