The Pharaonic Life of Government Officials

(MENAFN-Panama Newsroom)

Senior civil servants seem to lead a pharaonic life, judging by the growing need to hire more and more people, without those of us who pay this payroll telling us why this expense is increasing so much. If we continue at the rate of the first four months, by the end of this year the state payroll will reach $4.75 billion, which on average would be about $200 million more than last year. And again, the institution at the top of employment contracts in April is the National Assembly, with nearly 1,730. The closest thing is the Ministry of Health, with 482 new employees. It is evident that the Ministry of Economy and the Comptroller’s Office have been extraordinarily negligent and irresponsible in handling this expenditure, given that we have a budget deficit that exceeds 4% this year and that it will be covered by the debt. Government madness is reaching unprecedented levels. Last year, the preliminary total balance of the non-financial public sector showed a cumulative deficit – in December 2021 – of the equivalent of only 500 million dollars less than the current cost of the government wage bill: approximately 4 thousand 240 million or 6.7% of the Estimated GDP. And yet, the party goes on as if making dollars. What unconsciousness! – LA PRENSA, 26 June.
